Mixed media artist/comedian, Sam Hotchner stradles the worlds of both show biz, and fine art. While integrating seemingly unrelated mediums, he continues to explore the often whimsical urban landscape. Past works of his have combined surreal sculpture, painting and performance.
Hotchner has an uncanny ability to extract humor from the most ordinary situations, as illustrated by the memorable stunts and pranks he and THE COMEDY PATROL have orchestrated over the years. He has a passion for costumes and antiques, and a pronounced ability to put common household objects in the service of his unique madcap delirium.
Many beach goers found the MISS ROBUTT ART CONTEST at Coney Island very exciting. THE COMEDY PATROL provided the beauty contestants.
Last fall, sam wore a large clock around his neck and possed as a lawn ornament in his pajamas, in a quiet Queens neighborhood. This distinctly comedy-esque prank, caused quite a stir in a normally placed surroundings, as two cars obviously distracted by such an unlikely sight almost collided.
This winter, in the middle of a blizzard, he donned a Gordon's Fisherman's costume, and he dangled a combination pool stick/fishing rod, in a bucket of catfish, with "LATE SHOW" painted on their sides. As Dave's crew filmed, the crowd outside cheered as Sam started throwing his fish at the busy Broadway traffic.
Sam's Robo art, from old lamps, computer parts, and vaccum parts, are especially Sam-using. He recently put his latest creation COMVEK, outside a New York bar, with a sign on him that, said "PLEASE HELP ME GET BACK TO MY PLANET FOR THE HOLIDAYS!" with a wireless speaker, and a microphone from within the bar, Sam communicated through COMVEK. Rewarding the laughing pedestrians with such lines as: I Know Elvis ... Can I lick your sneakers? ... So what color is your toothbrush?
For Sam Hotchner, and THE COMEDY PATROL, the city is a vast gagmill and a repository for the found materials and props which he creates his art and comedy. His work is a testament to the endless variety, and ongoing sitcom that is New York. Future comedy hints at a more extensive, interactive approach to mining the city for absurdity staging ever wackier characters and pranks, that both delight and make us realize "normality" is something we take for granted and can be subverted at will by a mischievious mind like Sam, and THE COMEDY PATROL .
